It was a sunny spring afternoon and everything seemed to just shine with happiness and optimism outside. Mika sighed, wondering why would she be outside today. She lazily picked up a blooming bud that was cheekily grinning at her toes. She stared at the red petals for a moment, and then closed her hand around them, crushing them.
Almost without realizing, she let it go. Drops of red fell, broken, on the grass while she hugged her knees. She sighed again, her chin resting on her knees, holding onto herself to stop herself from screaming, crying, anything...
It was so unfair. She wanted to blame him, really, but he was her father. And it was just a stupid cat. Why get so worked out? She closed her eyes, strangling a sob and chasing away the tears. Because it was her mother's.
All she had now were memories. Not even a scrap paper with spidery writing. Not even a photo with her smiling eyes. Not even a shirt she used to wear. All gone...
But those were gone right after she was gone. She never actually had them. Father was crushed, so he crushed everything there was left of her, condemning her to the forgetful time.
All but that. The black cat. And it seemed everything her mother had been had been transferred to that cat. And now, that cat was gone, too. And she would fade into forgetfulness, no matter how hard she would try to remember her flowery scent, her spidery writing that fascinated her and those smiling grey eyes.
Mika choked on another sob, hugging her knees tighter. She couldn't, wouldn't cry now. She was a big girl now, she wouldn't cry like a baby. She had to be tough. She closed her eyes tight shut again.
But as a crystal tear escaped her closed lids and slid down her cheek, she realized that being tough was harder than she thought it would be.
