Mariko let out a sigh as she sipped on her tea. She could feel the warm liquid slide down her throat, warming her body quite pleasantly. She set down the cup and picked up her book and opened it to her bookmark about halfway through. It was a large book title Beginning Spanish. Mariko's sharp green eyes swept the lines rapidly behind black framed glasses. Her blonde hair was tied up simply in a bun, leaving her bangs and some hair in front of ears loose.
She broke her eye contact with the book briefly as she took another sip of her tea.
This is the good life Mariko thought pleasnantly.

Music blaring through the earphones of his MP3 player, Jun carried his laptop from his dorm room towards the cafeteria because he wanted to have some coffee while continuing his essay on the life cycle of an anteater. Even if going to the cafeteria meant not smoking, at least he was having coffee.
Procuring a cup from from of the vending machines, Jun sought for a table where there was a nearby socket. He didn't like wasting the battery of his laptop and was keen on using the school's resources whenever he could. Jun finally found one, and it meant taking a table near the Language teacher, Jurin-sensei. He gave her an acknowledging smile, then put his coffee down to set up his laptop.
After quite sometime, Jun could be heard clicking away on his laptop. His coffee was gone, and a few more minutes went by before his hand automatically reached inside his jacket pocket to take a stick of cigarette. The other hand reached inside his pants pocket to reveal a lighter, and seconds later, he was breathing nicotine once more. As he was about to type again, he realized what he had done and swore out loud, within earshot of the teacher.
Jun gave her a panicked look and immediately extinguished the cigarette inside his empty coffee cup.
"Er, gomen nasai?" he said to Jurin-sensei.

"You know that smoking is bad for your health?" Mariko asked, not looking up from her book. She didn't really take offense by the action, but was more concerned about the student. But, acting angry or obviously concerned usually made students scared. So, instead, Mariko asked as if she were asking what the weather was.
The swearing part would come later. One thing at a time.
Mariko turned her page casually and continued reading while waiting for a reply.

Kayoko shyly walked up to the teacher. "Konnichi wa, sensai-san. Sumimasen kudasai, watashi wa Kayoko-chan.." Kayoko bowed and sighed, thankfully she had remembered some Japanese. (Translation: Greetings, teacher. Exuse me please, I am Kayoko.)

"Eh, hai, hai. Gomen ne," Jun replied, nodding and grinning sheepishly at the teacher. At this time, he wouldn't dare go against a teacher especially if he just swore in front of her. Jun was surprised at the calmness of Jurin-sensei, but he knew she wouldn't let go of his swearing that easily. Somehow, she was to him, a strict person.
He didn't know how to explain his smoking habit to his teacher. "Er..," was all he could say, while looking at another student who addressed Jurin-sensei.

Kayoko noticed the boy who she heard from afar swearing, looking at her. Kayoko smiled, but then frowned. "Smoking is very hard to quit, but I think your lungs shall thank you!" Kayoko said smiling again. She turned to the sensai. "Sensai, gomen nasai...Domodachi?" (Translation: Teacher, I'm very sorry...Friend? ) ((As in, will you be my friend))

"Hello, Arigawa-san. You're full of energy, as usual," Mariko greeted the girl, putting her book on the table top, "Did you need anything in particular?"
Well, at least I'm not the only one to tell him to stop smoking Mariko thought, secretly relieved. Peers would get through much faster than a teacher. Get enough peers and friends, and maybe he will be able to quit. But a single teacher won't accomplish much.

"Of course it's all right. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't an emergency or something along those lines," Mariko said.
"You are in Daaku, right Arigawa-san?" Mariko asked, wondering what this girl was good at. Drawing perhaps?
